I like the lines by Lenore Kandel that you've quoted here. Her lines and her language sound almost Shakespearean -- when I first read the lines, I almost heard them in that blank verse pentameter Shakespeare used throughout his plays. Quite remarkable. She did have an ear.

ReplyDeleteHer studies of Buddhism and Hinduism, along with classic mythology, have given that kind of feel to her languages. Besides the Shakespearean pacing you detect, there is a kind of spiritual language in her work, too, especially in her longer poems.

before the men-poets got their grip
on things....

ReplyDeleteI feel exactly the same way ... though how relatively hard it was for years to get her work takes a little of the blame from your shoulders.
I think the intro you speak may be the finest manifesto to come out of the Beat period, period. I'll be putting up the review a little later this morning. Long though it is, I'm afraid I didn't capture how truly magical her work is.
