is The Love Book in this Collected ?
I lent my copy to a "friend" about in 1974
& she destroyed it !

I like the lines by Lenore Kandel that you've quoted here. Her lines and her language sound almost Shakespearean -- when I first read the lines, I almost heard them in that blank verse pentameter Shakespeare used throughout his plays. Quite remarkable. She did have an ear.

Lyle:
Her studies of Buddhism and Hinduism, along with classic mythology, have given that kind of feel to her languages. Besides the Shakespearean pacing you detect, there is a kind of spiritual language in her work, too, especially in her longer poems.

before the men-poets got their grip

The book is really great - has The Love Book and all of Word Alchemy and a ton of early and later stuff. Amazing stuff - I'm working up a review I hope will do it and her justice.

I feel exactly the same way ... though how relatively hard it was for years to get her work takes a little of the blame from your shoulders.
I think the intro you speak may be the finest manifesto to come out of the Beat period, period. I'll be putting up the review a little later this morning. Long though it is, I'm afraid I didn't capture how truly magical her work is.
