Neal Cassady: The Denver Years & Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill: Athair

A couple of items of interest: a new public television special, Neal Cassady: The Denver Years and a reading of Athair (Father) by Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill.   Enjoy.

Afraid I have very little familiarity with Neal Cassady.

He was Japhy Ryder's friend ...

but, in a fictive-sort-of way,
as Dean Moriarty in the other novel...

that whole group now worshiped as gods
&
have become Big Business .

Don,

During my blighted period as a New York lower east side tribal hippie, hanging out with a weird little flock called The Group Image -- this would be the summer of '67 -- Neal showed up in town.

He was a bit frazzled around the edges at that stage, hard living had taken a toll on the engine. Ted Berrigan and I walked him around the city. The congregation ended up at WBAI, where freeform communal music was made in the studio. Neal and Ted made quite a pair, two nonstop talkers. To get a word in edgewise, in such company, impossible.

Frantic!

The gaping wordless hippies meanwhile left to finger the god's eyes and beads...

Those were the days (and nights).
