Yesterday was the birthday of the great African American poet, James Weldon Johnson. Though sadly this poem still applies to the situation of many African Americans in the United States today, it also has a larger context in light of contemporary history.

How would you have us, as we are?
Or sinking 'neath the load we bear?
Our eyes fixed forward on a star?
Or gazing empty at despair?
Rising or falling? Men or things?
With dragging pace or footsteps fleet?
Strong, willing sinews in our wings?
Or tightening chains about our feet?
