Lenore Kandel: Reading/Book Launch

A major new publication, The Collected Poems of Lenore Kandel from North Atlantic Books is just out.  For those of you within striking distance of San Francisco and The Beat Museum, this is an event to check out.

I'll be posting a review of this book sometime soon - stay tuned.

Rebirth

Whom shall I with tender touch destroy
and then what nicety of fate
   waits for my quiet step
as like a mindless mouse I walk the lotus wheel
wearing desire as a phoenix chain
   this time again
Lenore Kandel
from The Collected Poems of Lenore Kandel

I like the lines by Lenore Kandel that you've quoted here. Her lines and her language sound almost Shakespearean -- when I first read the lines, I almost heard them in that blank verse pentameter Shakespeare used throughout his plays. Quite remarkable. She did have an ear.

I'm happy to report that it is, along with the entire "Word Alchemy" and over 150 more pages of previously uncollected work.

A review coming soon ...

Lyle:

Her studies of Buddhism and Hinduism, along with classic mythology, have given that kind of feel to her languages. Besides the Shakespearean pacing you detect, there is a kind of spiritual language in her work, too, especially in her longer poems.

More soon.

for those of y'all who are too young to

and

WOWW !

and just NOW seeing that she died in 2009 !!!

in all ways I prefer & inhaled the work of the "beat" lady poets
before the men-poets got their grip
on things....

I think that I'll pay/order this one at the full price... AND NOT
one of those kindle 'things'

p.s. I do have that reprint version w the brownish
cover...

sure am glad I "was there" in the late 50's and 60's and 70's

shld have kept my notebooks .... and written down more of
now ? all af that revisionist, academic, appropriation c=r=a=p
is driving me to ...... (a self-cancelling) isolation &
futility

Ed,

The book is really great - has The Love Book and all of Word Alchemy and a ton of early and later stuff. Amazing stuff - I'm working up a review I hope will do it and her justice.

I know you'll love it. Thanks for the Independent link, too.

all-so included ?

all of the present Lang Gang Academic "poet-Teachers
and their students ought to memorize this intro ..

I got tears in my eyes
& sudden shiverings
in my body
that I am just now

in my Old SAge

discovering her work
(& other things)
thaT I detoured around.

also

just came across
& ordered a copy
of

Peter Coyote's
Sleeping Where I Fall

- from the excerpts
via "view inside this book"

Coyote
puts things

(as Lenore Kandel et all
her Digger friends
so did

/ pu things into that

"just what is (was)" attitude

-for those who dig it !

Pass the word, Charles.

I feel exactly the same way ... though how relatively hard it was for years to get her work takes a little of the blame from your shoulders.

I think the intro you speak may be the finest manifesto to come out of the Beat period, period. I'll be putting up the review a little later this morning. Long though it is, I'm afraid I didn't capture how truly magical her work is.
